History of Lodge Newlands No 949

16th Dec 1902	Preliminary meeting held in Coalburn Inns. The following Brethren were present.
	Alexander Arneil No. 20, James Morris No. 20, John Miller No. 118, William Bain No. 20, Thomas Watson No. 118, Samuel Nicol No. 118, Robert Patrick No. 507, John Woodburn No. 354(Glasgow), William Carruthers No. 114(Cambuslang), Robert Gilston No. 245(Glenbuck), William Heaps No. 166(Airdrie), Hugh Gillies No. 245(Glenbuck), John Odger No. 507.
	At this meeting, Alexander Arneil was appointed Chairman and granted permission to approach Provincial Grand Lodge regarding the formation of a Lodge in Coalburn.
12th Jan 1903	The following Office Bearers were elected.
	RWM Alex' Arneil, DM Hugh Gillies, SM John Odger, WSW John Woodburn, WJW John Miller, SD Wm Bain, JD Wm Carruthers, IG Samuel Nicol, OG Thomas Watson, Treas' James Morris, Sec' Harry Moore.
25th May 1903	Charter granted and approval from St Bride Douglas, Douglas Water, and Lesmahagow to form Lodge. The Lodge to be termed 'Newlands Lodge Coalburn', named after Lord Newlands.

The Right Honorable James Hozier M.P. who later became the 2nd Lord Newlands, The Most Worshipful Grand Master Mason of Scotland between 1900 and 1904, and whose name this Lodge adopted when receiving their Charter on Thursday 7th May 1903.
