Community Involvement

The Lodge has been actively involved in the local community since it was first established. Below are just some of the activities that the Lodge is involved with.

Burns Supper

The Lodge has, for many years, been involved in the Burns competition at the local primary school.
This started with the children meeting in the headmaster's office and reciting their poems.
Through the years the competition has gone from strength to strength and is now held in the main assembly hall to accommodate the large number of children taking part. Highland dancing and singing competitions are now included.
The Lodge sponsors this and each year three Brethren visit the school to act as judges and the winners are invited to our Lodge Burns Supper, where they recite their winning poems and are then presented with a certificate and a medal from the RWM as a reward for their endeavours.

Aged Brethren's Dinner

In January of each year, the Brethren of the Lodge hold an evening for our aged brethren. On the night, they are provided with a hearty meal and an evenings entertainment, dancing and foot-tapping to our local accordion players Charlie Thomson and Jimmy Brodie. There are also a few drams added (for medicinal purposes only, of course!!). It is really nice to see so many of the older Brethren and their partners coming together on this special night.

Coalburn Gala Day

Every year, the R.W.M is asked to judge in the local Gala Day Parade. The role might seem easy to someone looking on, but speaking from experience, it can be a daunting task. There are a variety of floats entered into the competition, all organizations in the community from the toddler's group to the oldest swingers in town!! The judging is never easy, which is a tribute to all the hardwork of those involved in the parade. All this makes for a fun day for everyone.
